Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD., in the late 1980s. There are numerous studies proving the effectiveness of EMDR for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders and Phobias. EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation (BLS), usually in the form of eye movements, tapping or vibration, or auditory tones to reprocess disturbing memories in adaptive ways. Application of BLS encourages the two sides of the brain to work together to reintegrate memories into an integrated and adaptive neural network.
